Google has started rolling out the August 2026 spam update, according to its Search Status Dashboard. The rollout applies globally and across all languages, and Google says it could take a few days to finish.
The Dashboard logged the update as an incident affecting rankings, starting at 9:27 a.m. Pacific on August 18. Google posted the release note a minute later, at 9:28 a.m. PDT.
As of publication, Google hadn’t put out a blog post to go along with the dashboard entry, and its spam updates page hasn’t been touched since December. No new spam policy types came with this rollout either, so the rules that already apply are still the ones to check.
The Third Spam Update this Year
This is Google’s third spam update of 2026. The March update was the fastest confirmed rollout in the dashboard’s history. The June update came a few weeks after Google clarified, on May 15, that its spam policies also cover attempts to manipulate generative AI responses in Search, including AI Overviews and AI Mode. Google hasn’t said whether the August rollout is aimed at that kind of behavior specifically.
What Site oOwners Should Watch for
Anyone tracking ranking changes over the next few days should be careful not to read too much into a single day of data. Checking Search Console for movement starting August 18 is a reasonable way to see whether a site was affected as the rollout continues.
For sites that do see fluctuations, the advice is to review compliance with Google’s existing spam policies. Google’s own documentation notes that recovery can take months, since its automated systems need time to confirm a site is consistently following the rules before rankings recover.
What Happens Next
Google will mark the Search Status Dashboard as resolved once the rollout wraps up, the same way it closed out the March and June updates. The March rollout took 19 hours and 30 minutes, while June took 2 days and 1 hour. There’s no word yet on how long August will take.
At Primotech, we’ll continue monitoring the impact of the August 2026 spam update and help businesses adapt their SEO strategies to stay aligned with Google’s evolving search guidelines.
